On Friday at the Ankara summit, US President Donald Trump announced his support for Ukraine to produce Patriot air defense missiles domestically. This decision follows a comprehensive military aid package for Ukraine totaling €140 billion agreed upon by NATO members. The production of these crucial missiles comes as Ukraine faces dwindling stockpiles amid ongoing Russian attacks.
Ukraine's New Defense Capabilities
In his announcement, Trump stated that the US intends to share its Patriot technology with Ukraine, allowing it to manufacture the missiles on its own soil. This marks a significant shift in the US's approach to Ukraine's defense capabilities, particularly after previously downplaying their military industry.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of this decision, highlighting the need for effective defense systems against Russian missile strikes. During a recent attack on July 6, the Ukrainian Air Force was unable to intercept any incoming Russian missiles, showcasing the urgency of enhancing their air defense.
A Historic Agreement for Ukraine
Ukraine would become the third country globally, following Japan and Germany, to be granted the license to produce Patriot missiles. Military expert Oleh Katkov noted, "That's really great, it's a historic moment... but it's important to realize that a process like this doesn't take just a few days or weeks." He emphasized that finalizing a government-level agreement is essential before production can commence.
