The housing affordability crisis is hitting supporters of Donald Trump hardest, with record home prices and a significant housing shortfall. As of May 2025, the typical home price has soared to over five times the annual income of an average family, making homeownership increasingly unattainable.
Record High Housing Costs
The monthly cost of owning a home has reached unprecedented levels, with many families struggling to keep up. According to Moody's Analytics, the supply of new homes has dropped by over 14% in May compared to the previous year, exacerbating the affordability crisis.
Despite the growing demand, builders are hesitant to increase supply. This reluctance is due in part to rising construction costs and economic uncertainties that discourage investment in new housing projects.
