The Weather Channel has announced a significant increase in its streaming subscription prices, raising costs by 66.7% to $5 per month, or $50 annually. This change was reported on Friday by Cord Cutters News and marks a major shift for subscribers accessing the channel's dedicated smart TV app, available on platforms like Android TV, Fire TV, Roku, and Samsung TVs.
Details of the Price Increase
Previously, the subscription fee for The Weather Channel's app was just $3 per month or $30 per year, a pricing model that had remained unchanged since April 2026, according to the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine. The app, which launched in May 2022, allows users to livestream The Weather Channel's broadcast network and access on-demand shows, local forecasts, and more.
This price adjustment aligns with the initial plans of Allen Media Group, which acquired The Weather Channel in 2018. They had intended to introduce a service called The Weather Channel Plus, which would have featured over 50 streaming channels. However, that service never launched, and the current app remains the sole source of streaming revenue for the company.
Challenges in the Streaming Market
The streaming industry is notoriously volatile, especially for legacy media companies like The Weather Channel. As consumer preferences shift, many traditional broadcasters struggle to find a viable pricing strategy that resonates with viewers accustomed to numerous free and paid weather reporting options.
