The Metropolitan Museum of Art has released a new publication titled Points of View: 100 Connections to Art in September 2023. This 488-page book features essays from 29 staff members, providing fresh perspectives on 100 pieces from the museum’s collection, categorized into five themes: Relationships, Self, Politics, Spirituality, and Environment.
Insights from The Met's Staff
Edited by Max Hollein, the museum's CEO and director, the book encourages dialogue across various professional departments. Each essay serves as a guide through the anecdotes and histories surrounding selected artworks. Dale Tucker, The Met’s senior editor, notes, “It is that miraculous connection between artist and subject, the self and the world beyond, that is the fever dream of all great art.”
Among the contributors is Laura Corey, an associate research curator, who connects Joan Mitchell’s 1979 painting La Vie en Rose to Fleetwood Mac’s 1977 song Silver Springs. She states, “We chose the theme of ‘connections’ to share both personal and unexpected perspectives on art.”
Exploring Diverse Themes
The thematic structure of the book allows for varied explorations of human connections in art. The first section, Relationships, delves into artworks like Greek funerary vessels and Renaissance portraiture. The subsequent chapters examine the Self, featuring Christopher Alessandrini discussing Leonora Carrington’s Self-Portrait (c. 1937–38) and its multifaceted interpretations.
