At least 12 people have died in a devastating wildfire in southern Spain on Friday, with authorities confirming that many of the victims are foreign nationals. The tragic incident occurred in the popular tourist region of Andalusia, where the ongoing heat wave has exacerbated conditions, prompting widespread evacuations.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The wildfire has resulted in the deaths of 12 individuals, including six found in the hamlet of Bedar and six more discovered in Los Gallardos. The regional government has reported that four of the deceased were trapped in vehicles, indicating the likelihood that they were British nationals due to the right-hand drive configuration of the car.
Regional emergency authorities stated that more than 20 people remain unaccounted for. The Andalusian Minister of the Presidency, Health, and Emergencies, Antonio Sanz, remarked on the situation, saying, "There are no words for such grief," referring to the incident as an "unprecedented tragedy."
Emergency Response and Evacuations
In response to the wildfire, approximately 150 firefighters and 220 soldiers from Spain's military emergency unit have been deployed to combat the flames. Various neighborhoods, including Almocaizar, Fuente del Albarico, Los Pinos, La Serena, and El Pinar, have seen evacuations as a precautionary measure.
