Major Sentencing in Rhino Horn Trafficking
In a landmark decision, a South African court has sentenced two men involved in what authorities are calling the world’s largest rhino horn trafficking case. This ruling marks a significant step in a lengthy legal process that has spanned nearly two decades.
Key Figures Sentenced
Dawie Groenewald, identified as the mastermind behind the operation, has been handed a hefty fine of 2 million rand or a four-year prison term. Alongside him, Tielman Erasmus also faced serious charges in connection with this extensive illegal trade.
A Long Legal Battle
The duo faced a staggering total of over 1,700 charges. These ranged from illegally hunting and dehorning rhinos to serious offenses like racketeering and money laundering. The complexity of the case and the sheer volume of charges contributed to its prolonged legal proceedings.
