An international rescue team successfully extracted Hernán Alberto Gil Flores, a 43-year-old security guard, from the basement of a collapsed shopping center in La Guaira, Venezuela on Thursday. This operation came eight days after devastating earthquakes struck the region on June 24, causing widespread destruction.
Rescue Operation Highlights
Rescuers first made contact with Gil on the weekend, managing to pass him water and nutrients through a narrow shaft as they navigated the perilous conditions. The operation, which involved teams from Costa Rica, Chile, the United States, Portugal, and Mexico, showcased international collaboration in emergency response efforts.
“We (were) never going to leave him here,” said Minyar Collado, a rescuer from the Costa Rican Red Cross, emphasizing the commitment of the teams involved. Gil was trapped under rubble for eight days but managed to survive thanks to the protective structure of his security cabin, which shielded him from debris.
Impact of the Earthquakes
The earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, have caused catastrophic damage across northern Venezuela, leading to over 2,200 fatalities and injuring more than 11,000. The Galerías Playa Grande shopping center, where Gil was trapped, is among the many buildings that collapsed.
