Sonam Wangchuk, a prominent activist, has entered the 17th day of his hunger strike in New Delhi, demanding a dialogue with the Indian government. Wangchuk's protest is aimed at the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over the NEET-UG scandal, which affected over 2 million candidates. Despite losing significant weight and facing health risks, he remains firm in his stance, refusing to end his fast until the government responds.
Support from Indian Political Leaders
Numerous political leaders from various parties have expressed their support for Wangchuk during his hunger strike. Notably, leaders from the Shiv Sena, Aam Aadmi Party, and Samajwadi Party have reached out to him, urging the government to take action. Uddhav Thackeray, Arvind Kejriwal, Mahua Moitra, and Akhilesh Yadav are among those who have voiced their concern for Wangchuk’s health and the issues he is advocating for.
On social media platform X, Akhilesh Yadav criticized the BJP government, stating, "The BJP government, which he is attempting to awaken through his fast unto death, is itself a principle-less and corrupt system." He emphasized the need for the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with the protesters.
Health Concerns Amidst Ongoing Protest
As Wangchuk's hunger strike progresses, his health condition has become a significant concern. Reports indicate that he has lost over 8 kgs (17.6 pounds), with alarming drops in blood sugar levels. His supporters, including the Cockroach Janta Party and students, have gathered at Jantar Mantar, emphasizing the importance of his demands.
