Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani Receives Condolences After Father Emir's Death

On July 13, 2026, Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani began receiving condolences at Lusail Palace in Doha following the death of his father, the late Father Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani, who passed away at the age of 74. The mourning period saw large crowds gather to pay their respects over the course of three days.

Throughout the mourning period, Sheikh Tamim welcomed numerous dignitaries, including US President Donald Trump, who expressed his condolences via phone call. The Amiri Diwan reported that the Emir thanked Trump for his heartfelt sentiments. Additionally, leaders from various countries, such as Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu, and Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, attended the condolence gatherings.

Crowds of Mourners at Lusail Palace

The reception at Lusail Palace attracted a diverse group of mourners, including members of the ruling family, sheikhs, ministers, and Qatari citizens. The Amiri Diwan set specific times for the public to pay their respects, from 8:00 AM to 11:30 AM and in the evening after Asr prayer until Isha prayer.

Among the notable attendees were the King of Bahrain, Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, and Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, as well as the Kuwaiti Crown Prince Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Sabah. A delegation from Saudi Arabia was also present, which included key ministers and officials.

Public Mourning Period Declared

In conjunction with the passing of the Father Emir, the Amiri Diwan announced a public mourning period lasting four days, starting on Sunday, July 12, 2026. Flags across the country were flown at half-mast, and work in ministries and government agencies was suspended until July 19, 2026.

The late Father Emir was laid to rest at Lusail Cemetery, following funeral prayers at the Imam Muhammad ibn Abd al-Wahhab Mosque. Condolences continued to pour in through various channels, including social media platforms, as leaders worldwide expressed their sympathy for Qatar and its people.
