Russian athletes could participate in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) provisionally lifted their suspension on July 7, 2026. The ban, imposed in 2023 due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, is now deemed "no longer applicable" as long as athletes comply with anti-doping requirements.
IOC's Lifting of Russia's Suspension
The IOC's decision allows athletes from Russia to compete, although it remains unclear if they will be permitted to display the country's flag, colors, or anthem during the Games. The organization continues to emphasize that it will not organize events in Russia or invite Russian officials to its events.
While some Russian athletes participated as neutrals in the 2024 Paris Games and the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, the IOC's recent announcement marks a significant shift in policy. Only 32 athletes from Russia and Belarus competed in the Paris Olympics as neutrals, winning a total of five medals.
Reactions to the IOC's Decision
The Russian government welcomed the IOC's decision, with sports minister Mikhail Degtyarev stating that the Olympic movement should remain free from politics. Degtyarev confirmed that Russia plans to participate in qualifiers for the 2028 Olympics.
