Robert Richardson: The White Devil, a documentary by Czech filmmaker Jana Hojdová, explores the life and career of the acclaimed cinematographer Robert Richardson. The film premiered in the Special Screenings program at the 60th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in 2026 and showcases Hojdová's unique bond with Richardson, who has won the Academy Award three times.
Documentary's Origin and Development
Hojdová's journey began as a film student with a passion for Richardson's work. After reaching out to the American Society of Cinematographers to connect with him for her thesis, she received a response three months later. Richardson's openness led to a deep, mutual exploration of their experiences and the filmmaking process.
During the initial exchanges, Hojdová asked personal questions, which prompted Richardson to share intimate details about his life. Hojdová reflected, "He told me it was great that I asked him about personal things and not just which film material and lenses he uses." This dialogue laid the groundwork for the documentary.
Challenges of Being in the Spotlight
Initially hesitant to appear in her own film, Hojdová faced her insecurities about her voice and presence on camera. However, Richardson encouraged her, stating, "People will connect with you a lot." Ultimately, she embraced her role, believing her journey mirrored a detective story.
