On July 14, 2023, France celebrated Bastille Day with a significant display of solidarity for Ukraine, during a massive parade in Paris attended by French President Emmanuel Macron and various European leaders. This year's event featured troops and aircraft from the 'Coalition of the Willing' supporting Ukraine amidst its ongoing conflict with Russia.
Bastille Day Celebrations with a Focus on Ukraine
The parade showcased nearly 6,700 troops, 98 aircraft, 31 helicopters, and 315 vehicles, marking a record participation in the annual celebrations. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended the festivities as a special guest, expressing gratitude to Macron for recognizing Ukraine's resilience. He remarked, "This is a sign of respect and recognition of the strength of Ukraine, our people, and our armed forces."
As the parade progressed down the Champs Elysees, French fighter jets flew overhead, trailing the national colors of blue, white, and red. Macron, addressing the situation with Russia, stated, "Yes, we cherish freedom and the rule of law. And yes, we stand ready to fight to defend them. Always, and at the cost of blood if necessary."

Among the high-profile attendees were German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, NATO chief Mark Rutte, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This gathering of leaders emphasized the unity among European nations in the face of geopolitical challenges.
