Preparation as a Key to Success
During his conversation, Harlin emphasized the importance of thorough preparation, stating, "It’s all about preparation. Preparation costs nothing." He believes that understanding the technical aspects of filmmaking enhances his credibility with actors. This approach has helped him work successfully with notable stars like Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis, and Samuel L. Jackson.
Harlin's preparation extends beyond scripts; he often learns the stunts required for his films. He explained, "Whether I’m doing Cliffhanger in the mountains, Die Hard 2 in airplanes, or Deep Blue Sea in water tanks, I learned how to mountain climb, I learned how to scuba dive..." This hands-on approach has allowed him to gain respect from even the most challenging actors.
Working with Val Kilmer on Mindhunters
Recalling his experience with Kilmer on the 2004 film Mindhunters, Harlin noted that Kilmer was known for testing directors due to his intelligence. Harlin stated, "Val was famous for testing directors always because he was a Mensa member." He understood that Kilmer's challenges often stemmed from insecurity and a desire to maintain control over his performance.
