Sian Astley, the Reform UK candidate for the Greater Manchester mayoral race, is facing significant backlash after reiterating her controversial comments suggesting that non-Reform voters should house 'migrant rapists.' Her statement, made in a Facebook post, has sparked criticism from political opponents and raised questions about her party's stance on immigration.
Controversial Comments Spark Outrage
On a recent Facebook post, Astley stated, "I’d ensure the Green voters, uniparty MPs … and Cllrs house the illegal criminals, rapists and economic chancers." This comment was made in the context of a Reform UK policy that aims to place migrant detention centers in areas represented by Green party officials. According to Astley, this policy reflects a democratic principle where voters should be responsible for the consequences of their electoral choices.
Astley's remarks have drawn ire from various political figures, including Labour Party chair Anna Turley, who labeled the policy as 'grotesque.' Turley emphasized that such statements reveal a fundamental contempt for voters, asserting, "By backing this proposal, Reform’s candidate has shown she shares Nigel Farage’s view that communities should be rewarded or punished based on how they vote."
Reform UK’s Immigration Policy Under Fire
The comments made by Astley come on the heels of a broader discussion surrounding Reform UK's immigration policies. The party's home affairs spokesperson, Zia Yusuf, announced that under their proposed policy, no migrant detention facilities would be established in areas governed by Reform-controlled councils. This has raised concerns about the implications of such a policy for communities within Greater Manchester, a notably diverse area.
