Peru’s President-elect Keiko Fujimori announced on July 10, 2026, her intention to restore diplomatic relations with Mexico. This statement could signal an end to the diplomatic rift that has persisted since November, when Peru cut ties after Mexico granted political asylum to former Prime Minister Betssy Chavez.
Background of the Diplomatic Rift
The diplomatic dispute began following Mexico's decision to grant asylum to Chavez, a former minister in the administration of left-wing President Pedro Castillo. Castillo faced multiple impeachment attempts by Peru’s right-wing Congress, leading to his removal in December 2022 and subsequent imprisonment for treason.
Chavez was part of the cabinet that resigned amid Castillo's alleged coup attempt. After seeking asylum at the Mexican embassy, she was sentenced to approximately 11 years in prison by a Peruvian court. Peru accused Mexico of interfering in its internal affairs, declaring President Claudia Sheinbaum 'persona non grata' and banning her from entering the country.
Fujimori's Plans for Diplomatic Relations
Fujimori, who won the presidential runoff on June 7, expressed her commitment to mending relations with Mexico during a public event in Lima. “On my part, there will be every intention to restore relations between Peru and Mexico,” she stated, emphasizing her desire for diplomatic reconciliation.
