On Friday, the National Energy System Operator (Neso) announced it will investigate claims that its management risked blackouts during the June heatwave to protect the organization’s reputation. The allegations, raised in parliament by Conservative shadow minister Claire Coutinho, involve accusations from whistleblowers concerning internal decision-making processes.
Whistleblower Claims of Decision-Making Risks
According to the allegations, control room staff were instructed to avoid leaving any audit trail regarding their decisions during a period of unprecedented heat in late June. This directive purportedly aimed to stabilize the power system amid surging electricity demand for air conditioning, which strained the grid.
Coutinho stated, “These whistleblowers are coming to me because they are worried that the grid is becoming increasingly unmanageable and they do not have faith that their concerns are being taken seriously internally.” This indicates a significant lack of trust within the organization regarding safety protocols.
Impact of the June Heatwave on Power Supply
During the heatwave, the power grid frequency fell below operational limits, with the system's frequency recorded at 49.66Hz, just above the statutory lower limit of 49.5Hz. This drop occurred between 17:30 and 18:30 on June 23, highlighting the strain on the system as demand surged.
