The US Department of Justice is investigating Shawn Fain, president of the United Auto Workers (UAW), over corruption allegations that surfaced on November 9, 2023. The accusations claim that Fain pressured a high-ranking union official to secure benefits for his family, followed by retaliation against the official when he refused. Fain, who is campaigning for a second term, has labeled these allegations as false and politically motivated.
Allegations Against UAW President Shawn Fain
According to a report from a court-appointed union monitor, Fain allegedly abused his authority to push for a financial bonus for his fiancée and worker’s compensation for his sister. The monitor's findings suggest that when Rich Boyer, the UAW vice-president, declined to approve these benefits, Fain removed him from his role as chief negotiator with Stellantis NV.
The investigation has garnered significant attention, particularly as it coincides with the upcoming UAW elections scheduled for August 2024. Fain has asserted that these allegations are part of an effort to undermine his re-election campaign, stating, “Rich Boyer has fed the monitor false allegations about me and is now trying to weaponize these bogus allegations to steal the upcoming UAW election.”
Background on the UAW Monitor and Previous Scandals
The UAW has been under scrutiny since a corruption scandal led to the appointment of Neil Barofsky as an independent monitor in 2021. Barofsky, previously appointed by President George W. Bush to oversee the financial bailout of Wall Street, was tasked with ensuring compliance within the UAW following prior corruption issues.
