The Moroccan government officially launched the construction of the International Cinema City in Ouarzazate on June 27, 2026. This $25 million film production hub aims to capitalize on the region's popularity among Hollywood filmmakers, particularly as the filming location for Gladiator 2.
Strategic Location for Film Production
Located in southern Morocco, Ouarzazate has long been a favored backdrop for epic films due to its stunning landscapes and unique architecture. The new film studio will be situated on a 24-acre site at the main entrance of the city, providing easy access to major routes like National Road 9 (RN9) and Mohammed V Avenue.
With the rise of streaming services and an increased demand for diverse filming locations, the Moroccan government is positioning itself as a competitive player in the global film industry. This project is expected to attract numerous international productions, which will contribute to the local economy and create job opportunities in the region.
Government Support for the Film Industry
The initiative is spearheaded by Morocco's Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication, which has recognized the potential for film tourism and production to boost the country's profile on the international stage. By investing in the International Cinema City, Morocco aims to enhance its infrastructure and services catered to filmmakers.
