Minions & Monsters, the latest installment in the beloved franchise, opened to a disappointing $61.4 million over the five-day July 4 weekend, marking a franchise low with a three-day total of $36.4 million. Released by Illumination and Universal Pictures, the film debuted at No. 1 but fell short of expectations compared to previous releases.
Performance Compared to Previous Releases
In contrast to its predecessors, Despicable Me 4 and Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned $120 million and $122 million respectively over their opening weekends, Minions & Monsters struggled to capture the same audience enthusiasm. The film's performance has led industry analysts to speculate about the franchise's future.
Despite the domestic underperformance, the film has fared better overseas, grossing approximately $98.43 million across 71 markets, showcasing its international appeal.
Current Box Office Standings
Following Minions & Monsters in the box office rankings is Toy Story 5, which garnered around $31 million, bringing its global total to $764.3 million. The film has performed notably well domestically, with $366 million of that total coming from U.S. audiences. Additionally, Disney celebrated a significant milestone with its Japanese opening of $14.6 million, marking the highest for a Hollywood studio in the country.
