Maggie Gyllenhaal shared her insights on directing and its parallels to motherhood during a press conference on July 1, 2023, at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. She expressed the thrill and challenges of directing, comparing it to the responsibility of caring for a child.
Directing: A Motherly Responsibility
Gyllenhaal emphasized the immense responsibility that comes with directing, stating, "I feel it is very similar to being a mother. You become a mother – all of a sudden you are actually responsible for the life of another person. That is both incredibly exciting, powerful, and absolutely terrifying." She highlighted that directing involves a major level of responsibility, which she finds more significant than producing or acting.
Her reflections on this aspect of directing reveal her passion for the role. Gyllenhaal stated, "In terms of responsibility, it is really major. That's a really interesting thing about directing, way more so than producing, and also way more so than acting." This comparison illustrates her deep connection to the art of filmmaking.
The Joy of Collaboration in Film
During her conversation, Gyllenhaal expressed her enthusiasm for working collaboratively with her cinematographer. She described the preparation process as an intense and rewarding experience, saying, "It’s so cool, it’s so intense, and there is the pleasure for me in being on set with a plan with a shared language that we’ve built together." This collaboration enhances her creative process, making it a joyful endeavor.
Gyllenhaal also noted that her love for directing has grown, stating, "I didn’t know how much I would love it. So sometimes when people ask me if I want to act, I think no, I want to prep with my cinematographer, and I want to keep learning this language that I have gotten so much pleasure out of learning." This passion for the craft is evident in her approach to filmmaking.
