Mexico has launched an investigation into allegations that the US misrepresented its involvement in the capture of drug lord Ismael ‘El Mayo’ Zambada García. The inquiry follows reports indicating that the FBI played a role in Zambada García's arrest on July 25, 2024, in El Paso, Texas, raising serious questions about violations of Mexican sovereignty.
Investigation into US Involvement in Drug Lord's Capture
The investigation centers around the claims made by the local media outlet Pie de Nota, suggesting that the FBI was involved in the operation to seize Zambada García from Mexican soil. Ernestina Godoy, Mexico's attorney general, stated, “If recent reports are confirmed, then all signs point to three serious issues: a series of violations of Mexican and international law; a pact made outside the bounds of the law; and a lie told by a US diplomat.”
Godoy’s remarks emphasize the potential legal ramifications should the allegations prove true, particularly regarding diplomatic relations between the US and Mexico. The Mexican president, Claudia Sheinbaum, echoed these concerns, highlighting the delicate state of US-Mexico relations amid ongoing cartel violence.
Context of the Arrest and US-Mexico Relations
The incident occurred during the administration of former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Tensions have escalated in the wake of Donald Trump's threats of military action against drug cartels in Mexico, which have heightened fears regarding national sovereignty. Reports in April indicated that CIA agents had previously operated in Mexico without government approval, further complicating diplomatic relations.
