On Friday, the New Museum in Manhattan announced the appointment of Massimiliano Gioni as its new director, following a 10-month search. Gioni, who previously served as the artistic director for 12 years, succeeds Lisa Phillips, the museum's second-ever director, who retired after 26 years.
Massimiliano Gioni's Tenure at the New Museum
With over 20 years of experience in the art world, Gioni has made significant contributions to the New Museum, including co-establishing the New Museum Triennial in 2009. He has curated notable exhibitions for acclaimed artists such as Lynda Benglis, Judy Chicago, and Faith Ringgold.
In 2021, Gioni played a pivotal role in realizing the vision for the exhibition Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America, which addressed themes of Black grief and white nationalism. He also curated the inaugural exhibition of the New Museum's recent expansion, titled New Humans: Memories of the Future, which explores technology's impact on humanity.
Challenges and Achievements
Throughout his career, Gioni has navigated challenges, including labor issues during Phillips' tenure, where unionized workers raised concerns about working conditions and contract negotiations. Gioni's extensive experience includes organizing international shows and biennials, with his notable achievement being the youngest curator to organize the Venice Biennale in 2013.
