Mark Lanier, a prominent lawyer, achieved a significant victory against tech giants Meta and Google on February 18, 2023, in a Los Angeles courtroom. The lawsuit, KGM v Meta et al., centered around claims that social media platforms like Instagram and YouTube are designed to be addictive, leading to severe mental health issues in young users.
Details of the Landmark Case
The case was brought forth by Kaley, a young woman who alleged that her addiction to social media began at age six with YouTube and at nine with Instagram, resulting in body dysmorphia, anxiety, and depression. Before the trial, Snapchat and TikTok settled out of court. Lanier's prosecution team aimed to prove that Meta and Google had intentionally engineered their platforms to foster addiction.
During the trial, Mark Zuckerberg entered the courtroom wearing Meta-branded sunglasses, which raised concerns about juror anonymity. Lanier expressed his worries about digital surveillance, stating, “We had fought hard for an anonymous jury.” The prosecution argued that the presence of Meta glasses could compromise the jurors' identities.
Innovative Use of AI in Legal Strategy
Lanier utilized cutting-edge artificial intelligence to enhance his legal strategy. His firm employed a bespoke AI from BoodleBox, which integrated various AI models, including Google's Gemini and ChatGPT. This AI was used to analyze juror data collected during jury selection, creating psychological profiles to tailor arguments effectively.
