The lawyer for Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a detained Gaza medic, reported on July 7, 2026, that his client was severely beaten in an Israeli jail. Nasser Odeh expressed grave concerns for Abu Safiya's well-being after visiting him at the Rakefet interrogation facility.
Odeh stated that he had difficulty recognizing Abu Safiya due to the extensive injuries he sustained, claiming, "He nearly lost consciousness several times." During their meeting, Abu Safiya described being subjected to extreme violence, particularly on the day of the visit.
Details of Allegations Against Israeli Authorities
According to Odeh, Abu Safiya alleged that more than five prison guards assaulted him following an appeal against his detention. He reported that he was attacked with their hands, batons, and hammers. "I had difficulty recognizing his features. Bruises covered his face, around his eyes, on his neck, and on his ears. Signs of beatings and torture were clearly visible on his face," Odeh recounted.
In response, the Israel Prison Service dismissed these claims as false. They stated that all detainees are held in accordance with the law and receive medical care based on ministry guidelines.
Background on Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya's Detention
Dr. Abu Safiya has been held without charge since December 2024. He was the director of the Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, where he treated patients amid a military siege. The Israeli military detained him, claiming that the hospital was a Hamas terrorist stronghold.
