A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot a Mexican national, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, during a vehicle stop in Houston, Texas, on July 7, 2026. According to ICE, Araujo was involved in a targeted enforcement operation and attempted to evade arrest.
Details of the Incident Involving ICE
ICE reported that during the enforcement operation, Araujo ignored commands to stop and allegedly rammed an ICE law enforcement vehicle. The agency stated that he “weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an ICE law enforcement officer.” This incident has raised significant concerns regarding the conduct of federal immigration officers.
Video footage from a nearby business captured the aftermath of the shooting, showing Araujo lying on the ground beside a white van while surrounded by officers. His son, Ronaldo Salgado, told Telemundo Houston that his father was searching for workers in the area at the time of the incident.
Calls for Investigation into ICE's Actions
In response to the shooting, Democratic U.S. Representative Sylvia Garcia has called for an independent investigation into ICE’s claims. She emphasized the need for all available evidence, including footage and communications, to be preserved and reviewed thoroughly.
