Germany's national football team coach Julian Nagelsmann has stepped down following the team's shocking exit from the World Cup 2026. The announcement came on Friday from the German Football Association (DFB) after Germany's loss to Paraguay in the last-32, marking a third consecutive World Cup disappointment for the team.
Details of Nagelsmann's Departure
Nagelsmann, who had been under contract until the 2028 European Championship, agreed to resign after a three-hour meeting with senior DFB officials. The DFB expressed appreciation for his commitment and ambition in a statement. “The decision was anything but easy for me,” Nagelsmann stated, emphasizing his dedication to the team's success.
In the wake of the loss, which ended in a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat against Paraguay, Nagelsmann received a severance package estimated at seven million euros ($8 million). This compensation is approximately equivalent to one year of his salary.
Germany's World Cup Struggles
This failure at the World Cup follows Germany's previous disappointments, including early exits in the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. The team has not won a knockout match since their victory in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina.
