On Friday, the German Football Association (DFB) confirmed the departure of Julian Nagelsmann as national team coach following Germany's unexpected exit from the World Cup against Paraguay. This decision came just four days after Germany lost 4-3 on penalties in the round of 32, marking their third consecutive early exit from the tournament. The DFB has already approached Jürgen Klopp about taking over the role.
Germany's Coaching Change
The DFB expressed gratitude towards Nagelsmann, who became the second-youngest coach of the national team at 36 years old. Bernd Neuendorf, the president of the DFB, stated, "The German Football Association expressly thanks Julian Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023. He is characterized by a high level of commitment and extraordinary ambition."
Klopp, who recently stepped down as manager of Liverpool, confirmed that he has had discussions with the DFB about the coaching position. He stated, "Yes, I can confirm the talks. Yes, Julian resigned, and the DFB is working on a succession plan and over the course of these deliberations, they have reached out to me."
Klopp's Background and Readiness
Since leaving Liverpool in 2024, Klopp has been serving as the head of soccer at Red Bull. He mentioned that the timing for a return to coaching is "better than it's ever been" but acknowledged his current contract situation. Klopp said, "The timing, even now, is not perfect because I am currently under contract with Red Bull, but it is still better than it has ever been."
