A collection of letters, books, and notes chronicling the friendship between JRR Tolkien and his profoundly deaf fan, Eileen Elgar, has fetched over £100,000 at auction. The sale occurred on July 10, 2026, at Sotheby’s in London, showcasing the enduring appeal of Tolkien’s literary legacy.
Details of the Auction and Notable Items
The auction featured several remarkable items, including a letter from Tolkien discussing the death of fellow author CS Lewis and a signed copy of The Adventures of Tom Bombadil. The letter alone sold for £20,480, reflecting the high demand for Tolkien memorabilia.
According to Will Passey, a specialist in the books and manuscripts department at Sotheby’s, the letter serves as a testament to the strength of the friendship between Tolkien and Elgar. He noted, "Although we have quite a lot of published letters of Tolkien's, these have been hitherto overlooked."
Background on Eileen Elgar and Her Connection to Tolkien
Eileen Elgar, who passed away in 1980, lived near the Hotel Miramar in Bournemouth, where Tolkien vacationed annually. She began corresponding with the Lord of the Rings author in the 1960s after reading his books and developing a fascination with his work.
