In an inquest on Monday, Jonathan Morgan, the head coach of Sheffield United Women, labeled Maddy Cusack as "generally a liar" during a Football Association investigation following her tragic death on September 20, 2023. The coroner's court in Chesterfield heard Morgan's comments as evidence from Cusack's family highlighted concerns about her mental health deteriorating under his management.
Details of the Investigation
Jonathan Morgan, who took over as Sheffield United's head coach in February 2023, faced scrutiny over his treatment of Cusack, who died at 27. During the inquest, Morgan denied allegations of verbal abuse, including claims that he called her a "psycho." He stated, "I had been concerned about her wellbeing," attempting to clarify his intentions.
In a session filled with tension, Morgan admitted to having referred to Cusack as "bottom-heavy" during a meeting, claiming it was related to her leg muscles in the context of a strength-and-conditioning program. He defended his comments, stating, "There’s definitely evidence to show Maddy omitted information to her family about my support for her." Morgan acknowledged the loss of medical records during a system transition, which complicated the investigation.
Concerns About Cusack's Wellbeing
Throughout the inquest, Morgan expressed his worries regarding Cusack's health. He noted a significant change in her appearance by August 2023, stating that she looked "dishevelled" and lacked the usual pride in her presentation at training. Morgan recalled, "[Normally] Maddy, when she came to training, prided herself on her kit looking quite well washed, quite well presented." He indicated that her concerns included feeling that her house was a poor investment.
