French football star Kylian Mbappe has fiercely defended himself against racist insults from Paraguayan Senator Celeste Amarilla following a tense World Cup match on Saturday in Philadelphia, where France triumphed over Paraguay 1-0. Amarilla's derogatory statements have sparked widespread outrage across France and beyond.
Controversial Remarks by Senator Amarilla
In the aftermath of the match, Amarilla took to social media to label Mbappe a "moron" and made disparaging comments regarding his heritage. She said, "Instead of mother's milk, he sucked on coconuts, and the most educated things he ever heard were chimpanzees." Such remarks have prompted a strong backlash from fans and officials alike.
Mbappe did not remain silent in the face of these attacks. He responded directly to Amarilla, stating, "Madame Celeste Amarilla, you are a despicable woman and unworthy of your office. You do not represent Paraguay — a country that has exuded passion and honor throughout the entire tournament." He further emphasized that he would not allow such blatant racism to go unchallenged.
Support for Mbappe from France and FIFA
The reaction to Amarilla's comments has been overwhelmingly supportive of Mbappe. The French Football Federation (FFF) condemned the senator's remarks, declaring them "utterly abhorrent and unacceptable." They also announced plans to file a complaint with the public prosecutor's office to initiate criminal proceedings against her.
