Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi is scheduled to meet with US President Donald Trump on July 12, 2026, in Washington. This visit marks al-Zaidi's first international trip since taking office earlier this year. During the week-long visit, the two leaders will focus on enhancing economic and strategic ties between Iraq and the United States.
Key Agreements Expected During the Visit
Government spokesman Haider al-Aboudi indicated that the discussions will revolve around several significant oil and gas deals. These agreements aim to bolster economic cooperation and attract US investments into Iraq's energy sector. Al-Aboudi stated, "The agreements to be signed will include several memorandums of understanding in the oil and gas sector, as Iraq prepares to bring in various US companies that will provide momentum to increase oil production capacity."
As Iraq faces economic challenges following the halt in oil exports due to the ongoing Iran war and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, attracting US investment is crucial for the country’s recovery.
Addressing Corruption and Security Issues
Since taking office, al-Zaidi has faced mounting pressure from the US to tackle corruption and disarm Iran-backed militias that threaten US facilities in Iraq. In a show of commitment to reform, Iraqi security forces recently conducted sweeping raids, arresting numerous prominent politicians and officials as part of an anticorruption crackdown ordered by al-Zaidi.
