Human Vapor, a new Netflix series co-produced by Toho, premiered on July 2, 2026. Directed by Shinzo Katayama, this eight-part series reimagines the 1960 cult classic of the same name. The story centers on a Tokyo killer who commits murders as a shape-shifting gas, challenging traditional crime thriller narratives.
Exploring the Concept of Human Vapor
The concept of a villain made of gas presents unique challenges for filmmakers. Katayama expressed his excitement and concern about portraying the Human Vapor, stating, “What concerned me most — and what I also looked forward to most — was how to portray the Human Vapor himself.” His lack of experience with creature films forced him to rely on imagination, as the antagonist is not visible on set.
The original Human Vapor was part of Toho's “Transforming Human” series, which included films like The H-Man and The Secret of the Telegian. The 1960 version featured a meek librarian transformed into a gaseous being, a concept that holds a nostalgic place in Japanese cinema.
High-Profile Support and Production Details
Toho's partnership with Netflix marks a significant milestone, as it is the studio's first streaming series. The screenplay was crafted by Yeon Sang-ho, known for the acclaimed zombie films Train to Busan and Colony. The visual effects were handled by Shirogumi, recognized for their work in Godzilla Minus One, which won the VFX Oscar at the 2024 Academy Awards.
