On Wednesday, social media platforms saw a surge in videos falsely claiming that Iran had launched a retaliatory strike on a secret US military facility. These claims gained traction as users shared a video purportedly showing a US base ablaze. However, this video actually depicts a fire in a market in St. Petersburg, Russia.
Misleading Claims About Iran's Actions
The video in question has been viewed over 288,000 times on X. The user behind the post claimed it showed a "highly classified" US facility on fire due to Iranian aggression. However, DW's fact-checking reveals that the clip is unrelated to any military conflict involving Iran.
Instead, the footage shows a fire that occurred in December at the Pravoberezkny Market in St. Petersburg. Visual evidence, including the building's structure, confirms this location. The video has previously circulated with various misleading claims, including false narratives of attacks in Dubai and Kuwait.
Origins of the Viral Video
This misleading video has resurfaced multiple times on social media, often accompanied by different false claims. Earlier iterations included assertions that the footage depicted a Hezbollah attack on a secret Israeli base. Each time, the video was shared across various platforms, including Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, and in multiple languages.
