On July 11, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama defended a controversial €4 million ($4.56 million) investment in a concert by US rapper Kanye West, also known as Ye. Rama addressed public concerns via a Facebook post, stating that the investment was essential to avoid embarrassment for Albania, given that nearly 25,000 foreign visitors from 80 countries had already purchased tickets.
Investment Rationale Behind the Concert
Rama emphasized that the concert would generate at least €100 million in revenue, citing a surge in accommodation bookings leading up to the event. He argued that the financial backing was necessary to ensure that the concert could proceed smoothly, avoiding potential cancellations that could harm Albania's reputation.
The decision to host Kanye West comes amid a backdrop of bans on his performances in various countries due to his controversial remarks, including antisemitic comments and praise for Adolf Hitler. Despite these controversies, West has been able to perform in countries like Slovakia and the Netherlands since last year.
Public Backlash and Government Response
Rama's defense of the concert comes as he faces criticism for other projects, including plans for a luxury resort linked to Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former US President Donald Trump. Protests against perceived corruption within the Albanian government have intensified, with demonstrators voicing their opposition to both the resort and the concert.
