Elon Musk faces increasing scrutiny over his past actions with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), particularly regarding recent cuts that have severely impacted Ebola response efforts in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). These cuts, made last year, have been linked to significant health crises and rising death tolls, according to experts.
Impact of USAID Cuts on Ebola Response
As reported, the cuts to USAID, which Musk has described as a necessary move, have resulted in a lack of preparedness for the current Ebola outbreak in the DRC. Jeremy Konyndyk, a former USAID official, emphasized that these changes have hindered critical health responses, stating, “Elon’s USAID crash-out over the past week has been a thing to behold.”
Experts believe that had these programs not been dismantled, the Ebola outbreak could have been detected much earlier, potentially saving thousands of lives. Davide Rasella, a research professor at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health, noted that the cuts have led to “significant numbers” of deaths.
Elon Musk's Response to Criticism
Musk has publicly dismissed the concerns raised by critics, arguing that they have failed to provide evidence linking his actions to fatalities. When confronted with specific instances of children who died due to the cuts, he lashed out, labeling a journalist as “an utter piece of shit and a liar.”
