On Monday, Microsoft announced 3,200 layoffs across its Xbox division, affecting key game developers including Bethesda and id Software. Reports indicate that staffing cuts at id Software may have resulted in the loss of a majority of its team, with estimates suggesting around 90 employees let go.
Impact of Microsoft Layoffs on id Software
According to Scott Miller, founder of Apogee and 3D Realms, insider reports reveal that a significant portion of id Software's workforce, including most of its coding staff, has been affected by the layoffs. Veteran programmer Michael Maynard, who has been with the company since 2011, confirmed on LinkedIn that he was among the “roughly 50%” of the id team that was let go on Monday.
Game Developer corroborated these reports, citing multiple anonymous sources. The layoffs come alongside the launch of the first DLC pack for Doom: The Dark Ages, highlighting the contrasting fortunes at the studio.
Bethesda's Response and Future Challenges
According to a report by Kotaku, as much as half of the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online has also been affected by the cuts. An internal email from Jill Braff, President of Bethesda, expressed gratitude to impacted colleagues while acknowledging the uncertain future for remaining staff. The email indicated a need for Bethesda to shift focus towards its strongest franchises.
