Doom developer id Software recently launched its expansion, Revelations, for Doom: The Dark Ages on July 10, 2026. This update introduces a new weapon and additional levels, but the launch has been overshadowed by significant layoffs at the studio.
Id Software Faces Major Layoffs
Reports indicate that id Software has faced severe staff reductions as part of Microsoft's restructuring efforts, with at least 92 of the 185 full-time employees laid off, according to GamesBeat. A Texas WARN notice revealed that 96 employees from the Richardson office were cut, along with 40 remote workers.
The state of id's team is concerning; sources suggest that the team responsible for the id Tech game engine has dwindled to a single employee. However, Microsoft refuted this claim, stating, “There are dozens of people working on id Tech across multiple locations.”
The Core of Doom Remains Strong
Despite the turmoil, Revelations exemplifies what makes the Doom franchise special. The expansion retains the fast-paced shooter action that defines the series while introducing a new spear weapon that changes gameplay dynamics. Players can use the spear to engage enemies from a distance, enhancing the strategic aspects of combat.
