Several prominent U.S. Democrats have retracted their support for Graham Platner, a Democratic Senate candidate from Maine, after allegations of sexual assault surfaced on July 6, 2026. Former girlfriend Jenny Racicot accused Platner of forcing her into nonconsensual sex in late 2021, claiming he entered her home uninvited while intoxicated.
Democratic Leaders Respond to Allegations
Following the allegations reported by Politico, key figures in the Democratic Party have pulled their endorsements of Platner. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer stated, “The allegations reported today are incredibly disturbing – violence, abuse and sexual assault are absolutely unacceptable.” Senator Kirsten Gillibrand echoed these sentiments, urging Platner to withdraw as the Democratic nominee for Senate.
Gillibrand emphasized the need for Maine Democrats to select a new candidate who can effectively challenge incumbent Republican Susan Collins. The Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee (DSCC) also announced that it would not invest in the Maine Senate race if Platner remains on the ballot.
Calls for Platner to Withdraw
The leadership of the Maine Democratic Party has joined the chorus of voices calling for Platner's withdrawal. They stated their commitment to supporting women and survivors, regardless of party affiliation. Representative Ro Khanna from California reinforced this message, declaring, “I’ve been very clear that sexual assault or violence against women is a red line.” He also announced his decision to withdraw his endorsement.
