On June 20, 2023, the world’s first museum of AI arts, Dataland, opened its doors in downtown Los Angeles. Co-founded by artist Refik Anadol, this cutting-edge gallery aims to reshape perceptions of AI art, welcoming over 10,000 visitors in its first two weeks. Anadol describes the current era in art history as a renaissance, proposing that AI is not just a tool but a transformative medium.
Exploring Machine Dreams: Rainforest Exhibit
The centerpiece of Dataland is Anadol's ambitious immersive installation titled Machine Dreams: Rainforest. This interactive experience uses advanced AI systems to create dynamic visual and auditory landscapes that respond to visitors’ movements and biometric data. Anadol states, “For three years, we started from scratch and trained our own AI models.”
The exhibit draws from 5 petabytes of data collected from natural environments like the Amazon, allowing visitors to engage with art in unprecedented ways. The installation not only showcases the potential of AI in artistic expression but also emphasizes ethical considerations in sourcing data, contrasting with practices of major technology firms.
Interactive Features of Dataland
Visitors to Dataland are equipped with wearable devices that track their movements, enhancing the sensory experience. The exhibit features immersive elements such as scents and visual effects that change in real-time. Anadol explains, “At Dataland, our first deep question is: Can artwork feel us back?” This innovative approach invites guests to interact with art beyond passive observation.
