The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) is celebrating its 60th edition in July 2026, showcasing a diverse array of films from around the globe. One vital figure at this prestigious event is Helena Koutná, a renowned interpreter who facilitates communication between filmmakers and audiences. Her role is crucial in bridging language barriers and enriching the festival experience.
Helena Koutná's Role at KVIFF
Since her debut as an interpreter in 1997, Koutná has become a familiar face at KVIFF. Working with the interpreting agency Artlingua, she has played a key role in ensuring that both Czech and international voices are heard. “It was an invitation I certainly didn’t have to think about twice before accepting!” Koutná stated, reflecting on her early days at the festival.
Initially, KVIFF employed a larger team of interpreters due to the absence of subtitles in films. “There were easily up to 30 interpreters working at the festival at any one time,” Koutná recalled. However, as subtitles were introduced, the number of interpreters has reduced to around eight, who now handle film introductions, Q&As, and occasional press conferences.
Skills and Techniques of Interpreting
Interpreting at KVIFF requires a unique set of skills. Koutná utilizes both simultaneous and consecutive interpreting techniques. In simultaneous interpreting, she listens to the speaker and interprets their words in real-time, while in consecutive interpreting, she takes notes and provides translations during pauses. “There’s no magic or tricks, just some techniques all interpreters learn,” she explained.
