Harvey Keitel, the legendary actor, emphasized the transformative power of film during an interview at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on July 11, 2026. He highlighted how arts can bridge divides in a world filled with conflict and bias.
Film as a Catalyst for Change
Keitel believes that in today’s tumultuous climate, where divisions often stem from trivial reasons, the arts play a crucial role. He quoted Aristotle, stating, “Words alone are not enough to change a culture. Aesthetic force is needed, and that is the artist.” He pointed out that film festivals like Karlovy Vary, Cannes, and Tribeca provide a platform for artists to share their perspectives and initiate cultural shifts.
“Change is a tool for growing as a people to cure our biases and start becoming human beings instead,” Keitel said, reflecting on the need for art to combat prejudice amid ongoing global conflicts.
The Personal Journey of an Actor
During the conversation, Keitel also shared insights into personal growth through acting. He noted, “The real gift is learning to know yourself through art,” which he believes opens minds beyond rigid identities defined by race or religion. His experience in New York theater exposed him to diverse beliefs, profoundly influencing his understanding of humanity.
When asked about directing, Keitel explained, “When you reach a certain place that I was fortunate enough to reach, acting becomes working with the director and being your own director many times.” He acknowledged that he never pursued directing due to time constraints and a lack of formal education in that area.
