On Thursday, at least 28 people lost their lives in a devastating fire at a shoe factory located in Fujian province, China. The incident, which occurred around noon local time, prompted a swift response from China's Ministry of Emergency Management, which deployed approximately 200 fire and rescue workers to the scene.
Government Response to the Tragedy
In the wake of the fire, President Xi Jinping has called for an "all-out search and rescue effort" along with a thorough investigation to ensure accountability for those responsible. The Ministry emphasized the urgency of determining the cause of the fire and implementing measures to prevent future tragedies.
Images from the scene show dozens of fire trucks battling the blaze while thick smoke continued to rise from the multi-story building. The Ministry's statement stressed the need for lessons learned to avert similar incidents in the future.
Recent Trends in Factory Fires
This tragic event highlights a troubling trend in factory safety in China. Following a series of deadly fires, including one in Hong Kong that claimed 168 lives last November, authorities launched a renewed campaign to enforce fire safety regulations in high-rise buildings and factories. In January, another fire in a residential building in Guangdong province resulted in the deaths of 12 people.
