The Chinese and Russian navies are set to hold joint naval drills next week in the waters off China’s eastern coast, specifically near the major port of Qingdao. The exercises, announced by the Chinese Ministry of Defence, will commence on July 10, 2026, and run until July 13, 2026, followed by joint maritime patrols in the Pacific Ocean.
Details of the Joint Naval Exercises
According to reports from Russian state media, a contingent from Russia’s Pacific Fleet has already arrived in Qingdao. This includes a cruiser, a corvette, a diesel-electric submarine, and a rescue vessel. The Chinese Northern Theatre Command will contribute forces that comprise two destroyers, a frigate, a submarine, a supply ship, and a rescue vessel.
During these exercises, both navies will engage in a series of operations, including reconnaissance, air and missile defense, and surface-strike maneuvers. The drills signify ongoing military cooperation between the two nations.
Background of China-Russia Military Cooperation
China and Russia have maintained a collaborative military relationship over the past decade, conducting joint naval exercises annually since 2012. Last year’s drills took place near the Russian port of Vladivostok and also included subsequent joint patrols in the Pacific.
