OpenAI has launched its latest model, GPT-Live-1, on July 8, 2026, which significantly improves ChatGPT’s voice mode. This upgraded model allows the AI to speak and listen simultaneously, reducing interruptions during conversations.
Enhanced Voice Interaction Features
The new GPT-Live-1 model is designed to create a more natural conversational experience. According to OpenAI research lead Kundan Kumar, this model is the company's "smartest voice model" yet. It automatically utilizes the best text models, such as GPT-5.5, for complex queries, enabling a smoother transition from research to conversation.
Key features include:
- Real-time translation capabilities
- Reduced interruptions during conversations
- AI-generated visuals for relevant topics like weather and sports
New Functionalities for Users
With the GPT-Live-1 model, users can now pause their speech, and the AI will wait for them to continue. This full duplex model can process inputs and outputs continuously. Additionally, it can acknowledge users with phrases like "mhmm" and "got it," making interactions feel more personal.
