On July 14, 2026, Brazil’s Supreme Court issued a ruling barring presidential candidate Flavio Bolsonaro from visiting his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro, for a period of 90 days. This decision followed an incident where Flavio read a handwritten letter from Jair during a social media livestream, which was deemed a breach of the former president's house arrest conditions.
Details of the Supreme Court's Ruling
The ruling was made by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who stated that the communication between father and son violated the terms of Jair Bolsonaro’s house arrest. Jair Bolsonaro, who has been sentenced to more than 27 years in prison for attempting to overturn the results of the 2022 election, is prohibited from using social media or communicating through third parties while serving his sentence.
The 90-day restriction will remain effective until after the first round of Brazil’s presidential election, scheduled for October 4. This timing means that Flavio, a senator and leading conservative candidate, will be unable to meet with his father during a significant portion of the campaign.
Flavio Bolsonaro's Response
Flavio Bolsonaro criticized the court's decision as “disproportionate” and accused Justice Moraes of attempting to interfere with the election process. A lawyer representing Flavio's campaign characterized the ruling as “illegal and unconstitutional,” arguing it infringes on Flavio’s rights as both a family member and one of his father’s lawyers.
