X, the social network, announced on July 6, 2026, that it is launching a new video editor and recording features aimed at encouraging creators to share original content instead of reposting others' material. The update seeks to enhance the user experience and combat the ongoing issue of content plagiarism on the platform.
New Features of X's Video Editor
The new video editing capabilities include:
- Overlay captions in multiple languages with customizable styles.
- Green screen tools allowing users to add custom backgrounds from their camera roll or other X posts.
Nikita Bier, X's head of product, emphasized the importance of providing creators with tools to produce unique content. "One of our biggest priorities is to give creators the tools to create original content [and] reward those creators," Bier stated in a recent post.
Addressing Content Theft and Spam
Despite the new features, X faces significant challenges, including a high prevalence of bots and recycled content. Bier pointed out that many popular posts on X feature stolen material, often years after their initial virality. This trend undermines the platform's goal to foster a thriving creator ecosystem.
To combat the negative impact of recycled content, X must ensure that creators can reach a broad audience and monetize their work effectively. As competition from platforms like TikTok, Meta, and YouTube intensifies, X must also rethink its creator relations to provide adequate incentives for exclusive content.
