Weight-loss jabs such as Wegovy and Mounjaro are changing grocery shopping habits for over two million users in the UK. According to a recent study by Worldpanel by Numerator, households with at least one GLP-1 medication user spent an average of £418 less on groceries in the year following the start of their treatment.
Impact of Weight-Loss Medications on Spending
These medications, which mimic the hormone GLP-1 that regulates appetite, have shown to significantly alter consumer behavior. The study, based on survey responses and purchase data from over 11,000 households in February, reported a national grocery spending decline of £780 million.
In addition to reducing overall grocery expenses, users shifted their spending patterns. For instance, they cut back on calorie-dense foods, spending 10% less on savory snacks and 5% less on groceries overall within six months of starting the medication.
Shifts in Consumer Preferences
As users experience reduced hunger, their choices also reflect a healthier diet. The findings indicated a decrease in spending on items like chocolate and pastries, while they began purchasing more fruits and protein-rich foods like prawns. Notably, users also reported a decline in alcohol consumption.
- 10% less on savory snacks
- 5% less on groceries after six months
- Increased spending on fruit and protein-rich foods
However, some products saw an increase in demand due to common side effects of these medications. Users bought more chewing gum, mouthwash, and hair dye to counteract issues like bad breath and thinning hair.
