The Wegovy weight loss pill, which contains the active ingredient semaglutide, is now available for private purchase in the UK as of July 6, 2026. Unlike the previously available injections, this once-a-day pill can be bought from various pharmacies, though it is not yet available through the NHS.
How to Take the Wegovy Pill
To ensure effective absorption, the Wegovy pill should be taken under specific conditions. Users are advised to:
- Take the pill on an empty stomach after not eating for at least 8 hours.
- Consume it at least 30 minutes before any food, drink, or other medications.
- Swallow it whole with a sip of up to 120ml of plain water.
Consistency is key; ideally, the pill should be taken at the same time each day. If a dose is missed, it is recommended to skip that day and resume the regular schedule the following day.
Comparing Wegovy Pills and Injections
Both the Wegovy pill and injection are designed to aid weight loss, utilizing the same active ingredient. While the injection is administered once weekly, the pill must be taken daily, which might be more suitable for those who prefer avoiding needles. However, the pill requires an 8-hour fasting period before consumption, which may not fit everyone's lifestyle.
For those currently using the 2.4mg semaglutide injection, transitioning to the 25mg Wegovy pill is possible with medical supervision.
