Victoria Coates, a former deputy national security adviser to President Trump, expressed agreement with the president’s skepticism about negotiating with Iran to resolve ongoing conflicts. During a press conference on Wednesday at the NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, Trump declared he did not want to engage with Iran any longer, labeling its negotiators as ‘scum’.
Trump's Stance on Iran Negotiations
At the NATO summit, Trump voiced his frustration, stating, “I don’t want to deal with [Iran] anymore.” His comments reflect a growing sentiment among some U.S. officials that negotiations with Iran may no longer be productive. Coates echoed this sentiment, suggesting that further talks could be a waste of time.
Coates, who served under Trump, highlighted that the Iranian negotiators have shown little willingness to compromise, which complicates any potential diplomatic efforts. She noted that the current geopolitical landscape makes successful negotiations increasingly unlikely.
Challenges in U.S.-Iran Relations
The history of U.S.-Iran relations has been fraught with tension, particularly following the withdrawal of the U.S. from the 2015 nuclear deal. This withdrawal has led to escalated hostilities and a lack of trust between the two nations. Coates emphasized that any future discussions would require significant changes in Iran's approach to diplomacy.
