A 43-year-old security guard, Hernán Alberto Gil Flores, was rescued from the rubble of a shopping mall in La Guaira, Venezuela on Thursday, eight days after two devastating earthquakes struck the region. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, resulted in nearly 2,200 fatalities and left thousands injured or missing.
Details of the Rescue Operation
Gil Flores was trapped in his security cabin, shielded by a pocket of air while the surrounding structure collapsed. The Costa Rican Red Cross (CRRC) first detected signs of life on Sunday, establishing contact with him. According to Minyar Collado of the CRRC, Gil Flores initially requested that they not inform his wife of his survival, fearing he might not make it.
After four days, international rescue teams celebrated as Gil Flores was evacuated on a stretcher, covered in an orange tarp. His wife, Gusbimar González, expressed relief, stating, “I saw a ray of light in the darkness.”
Challenges Faced by Rescuers
The rescue operation was coordinated by a team of Chilean firefighters, who worked alongside specialists from the US, Portugal, and Mexico. They navigated unstable structures, heavy rain, and aftershocks to reach Gil Flores. During the final three days, they maintained contact with him using a telescopic camera and supplied him with water and nutrients.
